‘With all my love, Kendra’: Richmond community honors mother, son found dead in Southside apartment

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A Richmond community gathered Friday night for a prayer vigil in memory of Kendra Irby and her son Kenyon Irby, who were recently found dead inside their Southside apartment.

Family members, community members and city councilwoman Reva Trammell all came out to the vigil on Friday, June 20 to show support and share condolences. They filled the lot with blue and pink, in honor of their lost loved ones.

Charles Willis, a local activist, read what he described as a "letter from heaven, from Kendra" during the vigil.

"With all my love, Kendra -- forever your sister, your momma, your aunt, your friend, your life," Willis read to the crowd. "Let’s give the Lord a hand. Praise for Kendra."

On Tuesday, June 10, officers with the Richmond Police Department responded to the Angela Drive apartments for a welfare check. That’s when they found both Kendra and Kenyon Irby with gunshot wounds. They both died at the scene.

"I'm really gonna miss them -- I love y’all," said one family member during the vigil.

Willis said Kenyon was 24 years old and Kendra was in her late 40s at the time of their deaths.

No one at the vigil shared further details about what led up to the shooting -- but police previously told 8News that it was a domestic situation.

"My leaving may have left more questions than answers," Willis read, continuing the letter.

The family plans to hold another celebration of life on June 28.

Richmond Police said the investigation is ongoing, but they are not looking for any suspects.
