Woman charged with murder after allegedly shooting, killing husband at Buckingham home

BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A woman has been charged with murder after authorities said she shot and killed her husband Tuesday afternoon.

At around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, the Buckingham County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call from a woman named Tanya Whetzel, who said she had shot her husband.

Soon after, deputies with the Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 6400 block of Plank Road in Dillwyn to investigate.

When authorities arrived, they found 56-year-old George Bowles dead at the scene, and Whetzel was taken into custody without incident.

Officials said Bowles was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond.

According to the sheriff's office, Whetzel was charged with murder in the first degree, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm in an occupied building.

She is currently being held at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville without bond.

Investigators said there is no threat to the community as of the time of reporting.
