Woman dead, man charged in Powhatan County domestic assault

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One person is dead and another person was charged after two people were stabbed during a domestic assault incident in Powhatan County Saturday night.

At around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, officers with the Powhatan County Sheriff's Office responded to the 2000 block of Red Lane Road for a reported domestic assault.

Upon arrival, they found a man and a woman injured from severe stab wounds. Officers provided first aid to the woman and attempted CPR, but she died before being transported to the hospital.

The man was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition, per officials. Officials have not identified the two injured people, pending notification of the family.

Officers also responded Saturday night to a neighboring residence, where a short standoff took place, and took 31-year-old Cody Travis Mulchi of Chase City into custody. Mulchi was injured at the time and was transported to the hospital.

Officials said Mulchi is currently in stable condition. He is facing several charges, including:

  • Second-degree murder
  • Stabbing with intent to maim, kill, etc.
  • Assault and battery of a family or household member

Mulchi will be processed after he's released from the hospital. No further information is available.
