Woman in critical condition after shooting in Colonial Heights, suspect in custody
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- A woman is in the hospital in critical condition after police say she was shot by a man in Colonial Heights near the city's border with Chesterfield County. According to the Colonial Heights Police Department, at around 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, officers responded to the Concord Avenue Apartments, located on the 1500 block of Concord Avenue, in response to several reports of shots fired in the area. The officers found a 32-year-old woman outside of the apartments who had been shot several times. She was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg before being transported to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, where she remains in critical condition. 43-year-old Earnest Hakim Vines III of Colonial Heights, who police say was in a relationship with the victim, has been arrested and in connection to the shooting and is being held at Riverside Regional Jail without bond. Vines has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding, reckless endangerment of a child, felony child abuse/neglect, domestic assault, use of a firearm while committing a felony and reckless handling of a firearm.
