Youngkin urges Virginians to prepare for hurricane season
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Governor Glenn Youngkin says that Virginia is prepared for the state of hurricane season, which starts on June 1.
“In any hurricane season, we have to be prepared for that worst storm,” Youngkin said.
Youngkin added that now is the time for Virginians to do the same. The governor urged Virginians to do three things to prepare.
First, plan ahead by checking to see if you have adequate insurance and by making sure you know your evacuation route and zone.
“If we have a big storm and we are issuing evacuation notices, it’s really important for people to know which evacuation zone they are in because it will dictate where to go,” Youngkin said.
Second, Youngkin said residents should make sure they have ways to stay informed.
“When we have issued an emergency declaration, that means notice everybody, stay informed because there is danger around us,” Youngkin said.
Third, Youngkin said it’s important for people to make smart decisions.
“If you were told to evacuate, evacuate. Don’t take silly risks. Again, your car is not a submarine, do not drive through water,” Youngkin explained.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30.
