15-year-old charged with murder in New Year’s Day shooting in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 15-year-old boy is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with a New Year's Day shooting that left a 19-year-old Richmond man dead.

At 12:58 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, officers with the Chesterfield County Police Department were called to a home on Broadwater Way for a report of a crash.

When they arrived, they found that a truck had crashed into the home. Inside the truck, officers found 19-year-old Andrew Giles of Richmond, who had been shot multiple times. He died at the scene.

A day later, on Thursday, Jan. 2, police arrested 20-year-old Nekyi Cherry of Richmond. He was initially charged with second-degree murder and shooting in a public place, though those charges have since been changed.

On Wednesday, Aug. 20, police announced that a teenage boy -- now 15 years old, but 14 years old at the time of shooting -- has also been charged in connection with Giles' death.
