22-year-old man charged after Richmond Department of Public Works employee shot, injured while collecting trash

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 22-year-old man has been charged with multiple felonies after a Richmond Department of Public Works employee was shot while working a trash collection route in May.
On Thursday, July 10, Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards held a quarterly crime briefing, where he said that 22-year-old Jordan Gayle of Henrico County was arrested on Saturday, June 28, in the city's Shockoe Bottom area with a firearm found nearby.
According to online court records, Gayle has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious shooting at an occupied vehicle and destruction of property.
At around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the 00 block of North 18th Street for a report of a person shot.
When officers arrived, they found a man who works to collect trash for Richmond’s Department of Public Works, who was on duty at the time, who had an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.
Detectives determined that a confrontation among other people in front of a business resulted in Gayle shooting at a vehicle that was leaving the area, according to police.
The employee was near the departing vehicle in a Richmond Department of Public Works trash collection truck when he was injured by gunfire.
Gayle's next hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4.
