Atlee Church and community partner up for ‘Back to School Community Day’

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -- Atlee Church and other organizations are teaming up to host a "Back to School Community Day" on Saturday, August 9.

The free event is aimed at supporting students and families in need, and is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Atlee Church on 7171 Verdi Lane.

Community members can expect to see:

  • Free clothing for children, teens and adults
  • Winter coats and shoes
  • Community resource tables
  • A "No-pressure, simple 'shopping' setup"
  • Friendly volunteers to assist families

Aside from offering clothing, several other organizations will be at the drive to provide resources and support for families. Those partners include:

  • The Hanover County Community Service Board
  • Hanover County Public Schools Family Engagement Team
  • Hanover Cares
  • Seva
  • Life4Real
  • YMCA
  • Hanover Safe Place

According to Atlee Church, the goal of Community Day is to "ensure every family in the Mechanicsville area can start the school year with confidence and dignity."

No registration is required for the event, participants are asked to just stop by, pick up a bag and select items they need with no questions asked.

“We’re here to serve you,” said Grace Young, one of the coordinators of the event, “We believe supporting our neighbors in practical ways makes a real difference.”
