(WRIC) -- The operator of an unlicensed assisted living facility hosted on an Orange County farm has pleaded guilty to related charges, including abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults. On Saturday, Dec. 21, the Orange County Sheriff's Office announced that it had finalized an investigation into a local farm that was offering assisted living and dementia care. This investigation began in June. Investigators discovered that said facility was operating without proper licensing. Additionally, it was failing to meet the required standards of care for the residents living there, according to the sheriff's office. All of its residents -- of which authorities did not provide a specific number -- were safely taken from the farm and placed in appropriate care facilities. According to authorities, they have since pleaded guilty to both charges. The sheriff's office provided the following statement in the wake of this investigation: "When considering care for a loved one who requires specialized 24/7 assistance, always ensure the facility or home is properly licensed and meets state regulations. If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a care location, please reach out to the Orange County Department of Social Services for guidance. Your vigilance can help prevent others from being placed in unsafe or substandard conditions. If you suspect a facility is operating illegally, please contact us immediately.
