City of Richmond to mail all rebate checks by Monday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Richmond has announced that the finance department will mail all rebate checks by Monday.

The Department of Finance has began mailing real estate rebate checks to Richmond residents that are eligible who owned property in 2024, and according to The City of Richmond, all checks will be mailed by Monday, June 30.

Resident should be aware of the following:

  • Checks will be sent to the address on file with the city's finance department.
  • Qualified residents do not need to take any addition actions.
  • Recipients can expect their checks in the mail by early July, depending on postal delivery.

Property owners (payees) with more than 35 characters in their names may require additional processing at financial institutions. The City of Richmond said due to standard character limits with check-printing systems some checks may require reprocessing.

This news comes after a city official resigned after over 8,000 residents received tax rebate checks with the wrong names.

According to a Friday press release from the city, there was a delay in mailing the remaining rebate checks due to incorrect checks that were sent out to the payee, "Hartshorn Community Council."

The rebate was approved in 2024 by the City Council, in efforts to offer financial relief amongst rising property values and cost of housing.

For questions about eligibility, issues cashing checks, or those who may need to update their mailing address -- contact RVA 311 by dialing 3-1-1 inside of the city limits or submit a ticket online.
