Colonial Heights Health Department closing next month, services shifting to Chesterfield
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- The Colonial Heights Health Department is combining with its Chesterfield counterpart, a move approved by both the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors and the Colonial Heights City Council.
Starting Friday, Aug. 15, services will no longer be offered at the Colonial Heights site. Instead, all health department operations, staff and services will relocate to the Chesterfield Health Department at 9501 Lucy Corr Circle — inside the Smith-Wagner Building, which also houses the Department of Social Services, according to a Friday release fron the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).
The decision follows years of planning. Colonial Heights previously notified the VDH that the current health department site would need to relocate.
However, efforts to secure a new space within the city were unsuccessful due to a lack of available medical office space and financial constraints.
Dr. Alexander Samuel, director of the Chesterfield Health District, said the consolidation is the best option for clients and staff.
“We’ve got a great partnership with Colonial Heights and Chesterfield leadership,” Samuel said. “They’ve been working hard with us to find a solution since March.”
Officials said the move will improve access to care and streamline services for Colonial Heights residents, while keeping them connected to other resources in Chesterfield County.
Though the physical location is changing, health leaders emphasize that their commitment to Colonial Heights stays the same.
“We are invested in Colonial Heights and look forward to continuing to support those in need,” Samuel said.
