Flying Squirrels fall on the 40th anniversary of The Diamond 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Flying Squirrels lost to the Chesapeake Baysox, 4-3, on Thursday night at The Diamond. The game also marked the 40th anniversary of The Diamond’s first game back on April 17, 1985.

It was Richmond’s fourth one-run loss of the season, and their third straight loss to the Baysox in the series.

Chesapeake scored first in the opening inning. Richmond tied it in the second with a two-out RBI double from Zach Morgan, then took the lead 2-1 in the fourth after a double by Jairo Pomares and an error in right field.

The Baysox answered in the fifth with a triple and RBI single to take a 3-2 lead. Richmond tied it again in the bottom of the inning with Bericoto’s RBI single.

With the game tied 3-3 in the eighth, Richmond pitcher Braxton Roxby gave up two walks. A bunt moved the runners over, and a groundout by Adam Retzbach brought in the go-ahead run for Chesapeake.

Richmond couldn’t get anything going in the bottom of the ninth, as Yaqui Rivera closed out the game for his second save.

Chesapeake’s bullpen shut down Richmond over the last four innings, helping seal the win.

The series continues Friday night with Richmond’s Manuel Mercedes (0-2, 9.53 ERA) facing Chesapeake’s Trace Bright (1-1, 2.08 ERA) at 6:35 p.m.
