Gas prices drop ahead of Fourth of July travel surge, lowest in four years

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As millions of Americans gear up for Fourth of July road trips, there's some good news waiting at the pump. Gas prices across the country — and right here in Virginia — are significantly lower than they were this time last year, potentially saving travelers hundreds of millions during the busy holiday weekend.

According to AAA, the national average for regular gasoline has dropped to about $3.17 per gallon, more than 30 cents less than last Fourth of July.

In Virginia, the average is even lower, sitting at $3.09 per gallon.

Prices have dipped roughly four cents in just the past week alone, with some areas in the Commonwealth seeing even steeper drops. In Roanoke, drivers are paying as little as $2.94, while the Richmond area averages around $3.23.

This decrease in cost comes after months of fluctuating prices. Experts attribute the decline to a stable crude oil supply, the seasonal switch to summer-blend gasoline, and easing global tensions that have reduced pressure on international oil markets.

AAA estimates that Americans will collectively save about $500 million on gas compared to last year's holiday. That’s a big help, especially with nearly 71 million people expected to hit the road this weekend—making it one of the busiest Independence Day travel periods in recent years.

For Virginia families planning to pack up and head out, the timing couldn’t be better.

Whether you're driving across the state or just heading to a nearby fireworks display, the lower fuel costs are providing much-needed financial breathing room during a time when every dollar counts.
