Hanover jury duty made more convenient with new management system

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Jury service in Hanover County is getting a little easier with a new online management system.

According to a release shared by the county on Thursday, Aug. 21, prospective jurors can complete eligibility questionnaires, request excusals and receive text and email reminders about their service.

“The public expects clerk's office services to be available 24 hours a day, not just during office hours, and this new option fulfills that need,” said Circuit Court Clerk Frank D. Hargrove Jr.

The enhanced system is to make jury service more convenient and improve communication with jurors while ensuring "the court has the people it needs to conduct trials," according to Tonya Edwards, the legal affairs manager and jury coordinator for the clerk's office.

“While the call-in system that has served the court well for more than 20 years remains in place, these new tools give jurors modern, flexible options,” Edwards said. “They also allow us to share last-minute schedule changes that could prevent jurors from missing work or making an unnecessary trip to the courthouse.”

The county said that, on Friday, Aug. 22, the clerk's office will mail about 4,500 questionnaires to randomly selected residents to determine if they are eligible for jury service in 2026.

You are encouraged to complete the questionnaire online, per county officials. However, you can also complete the questionnaire on paper and return by mail within 10 days.
