Henrico neighbors frustrated with road safety after deadly crash

HENRICO COUNTY, Co. (WRIC) -- Neighbors in Henrico County are raising concerns about road safety following a deadly crash at the intersection of Nine Mile Road and Laburnum Avenue. The crash, which happened just before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, marks the seventh reported accident at this location this year. "We were at work and we heard a loud boom," said Family Dollar employee Cheryl Poindexter. The store is just off the intersection where the accident happened. The employees 8News spoke to said they've seen crashes and plenty of near-misses at this intersection nearly every week. Both described the scene as chaotic, with police walking through the area with flashlights. According to police, 56-year-old Brenda Lee Butler lost control of her vehicle while driving westbound down Nine Mile Road. She then ran off the road twice before flipping her car multiple times. Butler was found outside the vehicle with life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. According to police, both speed and alcohol contributed to this incident. Hanover County Public Schools give update on baseball program suspension Locals said they witness near-misses at this intersection nearly every week, and speed is almost always an issue. "[They drive] like they're in a race," Neil said. "They even speed in the parking lot," Poindexter added. Police continue to investigate this crash.
