Hopewell wastewater facility hit by late-night power outage
HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Hopewell experienced a power outage at its wastewater treatment plant due to faulty wiring late Friday night.
According to a release shared by the city on Saturday, July 12, the Hopewell Water Renewal (HWR) facility lost power at the headworks of the domestic influent system at around 11:50 p.m. Friday.
The power failure caused the equipment to be inoperable, leading to overflow conditions at the influent screens.
HWR staff and contractors worked to restore the affected systems, with full functionality expected to be restored by late afternoon on Saturday, July 12.
Plans for a permanent repair are scheduled to be completed by Friday, July 18.
Authorities say the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has been notified and that there is no impact to residential sewer service, and drinking water remains safe.
