‘I want my $500’: Henrico senior wants answers after Walmart pre-paid card money disappears

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Henrico senior is trying to get to the bottom of a debit card cash disappearing act after he says $500 was stolen from him.

Robert Herndon is a Henrico County senior who has been trying to wrap his mind around one question over the past few weeks -- how did the money on a prepaid card he purchased from Walmart seemingly disappear?

Herndon said his frustration started in July after he bought a Green Dot pre-paid card from a Walmart in Henrico's West End. Herndon says things took a turn before he could make his first purchase.

"When I got home, I noticed before I hardly even had time to take the card out of the box. There was a $500 charge that I didn't make," Herndon said.

After checking his account, Herndon says he noticed a $500 transaction that he said he did not authorize. When trying to contact customer service, Herndon said he had a hard time speaking with a representative.

"I've got $500 that's been basically stolen from me at this point," Herndon added. "And I would think that Walmart would want to take care of this a little, a little quicker than they're dealing with it."

8News reached out to Walmart and the card company Green Dot. A spokesperson from Green Dot provided us with the following statement:

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention. I wanted to follow up ahead of your deadline and provide an update. After a few attempts to reach the customer directly, our team was able to speak with him today and advise him his dispute is under review, and they would be in touch with further updates directly. Once the investigation is complete, we’re happy to follow up with you. Green Dot
