Investigation into USPS mail carriers robbed at gunpoint continues over a year later
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The investigation into the back-to-back armed robberies of two mail carriers in Richmond over a year ago continues, with police sharing updated photos of suspects.
On Thursday, March 28, 2024, at around 2:10 p.m., Richmond officers were called to the 2200 Block of East Franklin Street for a report of armed robbery. A mail carrier told police that a man held her at gunpoint, demanded she give him her mail keys, then later fled on foot towards North 21 Street.
This is just one of multiple armed robbery investigations involving United States Postal Service (USPS) workers who were robbed last year.
The Richmond Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspects shown in the photos below.
The suspect involved in the robbery that occurred on March 28 is described by police as a Black male, last seen wearing a gray colored sweatshirt and dark blue jeans.
Five days after this incident, another mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint for their mail key on Wellford Street in Richmond's Northside.
The suspect in that robbery was described by police as a Black male, standing at approximately 5-foot-10-inches-tall, and was last seen wearing all black clothing.

During their investigation, detectives determined these mail carriers were specifically targeted because of their mail key. Police have since cautioned the public about using USPS blue mailboxes to send mail.
In a previous press release by USPS, the organization encouraged the public to instead deposit mail at secure locations, including:
- Inside your local post office
- At your place of business
- Hand it directly to a mail carrier
Richmond detectives and the U.S. Postal Inspector are still investigating.
