Man arrested after assaulting 2 deputies, hours-long standoff in New Kent County
NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 62-year-old man was arrested after he reportedly assaulted two deputies before an hours-long standoff with authorities in New Kent County on Tuesday. According to the New Kent County Sheriff's Office, 62-year-old Earl Marvin Taylor, of Barhamsville, Virginia, was arrested following an hours-long standoff in New Kent County on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Sheriff's Office said the incident began at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday when deputies responded to reports of an alleged assault on a tow truck driver who was legally attempting to repossess a vehicle at 5511 Holly Fork Road. When deputies arrived on scene, they encountered Taylor, who reportedly became combative. A struggle then ensued during which a taser was deployed by authorities. According to the Sheriff's Office, during the altercation, Taylor assaulted two deputies, one of which sustained an injury to his foot and required medical attention. Authorities said Taylor then retreated into his home, prompting more law enforcement to respond. The New Kent Sheriff's Office Crisis Negotiation Team, Emergency Response Team, drones, Virginia State Police and an armored vehicle provided by the James City County Police Department were deployed to the scene. The Sheriff's Office said negotiators worked for several hours in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and secure a peaceful surrender from Taylor. After negotiations proved to be unsuccessful, a search warrant for the residence and a felony arrest warrant for Taylor were obtained. Emergency Response Team members then made entry into the home and took Taylor into custody without further incident. According to the Sheriff's Office, a female occupant inside the home, who was reported to have the ability to leave, refused to cooperate with authorities but was not injured during the incident. Taylor was transported to a local hospital for evaluation before he was taken to Pamunkey Regional Jail, where he was held without bond.
