Navigating holiday returns and what to know before returning items
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Even if you check your list and check it twice this holiday season, gift returns are bound to happen. Experts suggest you know what you're getting yourself into before asking for your money back.
Maybe the shoe didn't fit quite right, or you didn't get the game you asked for. There are several reasons why you may decide to return an item instead of keeping it.
According to the Better Business Bureau, a majority of consumers make at least one return each holiday season.
What some shoppers may not realize is that each store can set its own rules when it comes to refunds and exchanges, meaning you may not be able to make the return you'd hoped for.
Experts want consumers to know every return policy isn't the same, and knowing the difference can save you time and money.
According to the National Retail Federation, stores can expect nearly $850 billion in returns this year.
Some retailers, including Amazon, market themselves on making returns simple. They require that items be returned in good condition within the return deadline.
However, some stores aren't as simple. Nordstrom offers returns on a case-by-case basis. Other stores like Macy's, TJ Maxx and JCPenney charge a restocking fee for the cost it takes to ship, inspect and repackage an item.
If you plan on making a return this season, many stores like Kohl's, Walmart and Target are offering extended return deadlines. Allowing consumers more time to decide if the gift is the right fit.
