Over 11,000 homes, businesses without power as storms hit Central Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Over 11,000 Central Virginia homes and businesses are without power Friday evening as severe storms bring high winds and heavy rain to the region.

Central Virginia has been battered by storms several times in the past few weeks, with multiple of these storms causing flash floods. On Friday, July 18, another wave of severe thunderstorms hit the area.

These storms are bringing down trees and damaging powerlines -- including one in Henrico County, located at Dickens and Staples Mill roads, pictured below.

As of 8:45 p.m. on Friday, about 11,298 Dominion Energy customers have no power due to this storm damage. This includes major outages in the following localities:

  • Henrico County: 5,414 homes and businesses without power
  • Chesterfield County: 2,864 homes and businesses without power
  • Dinwiddie County: 1,767 homes and businesses without power
  • Sussex County: 436 homes and businesses without power
  • Buckingham County: 210 homes and businesses without power
  • Petersburg: 185 homes and businesses without power
  • Richmond: 176 homes and businesses without power
  • Cumberland County: 137 homes and businesses without power
  • Hanover County: 109 homes and businesses without power
