Over 7,500 homes, businesses without power as storms hit Central Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Over 7,500 Central Virginia homes and businesses are without power Friday evening as severe storms bring high winds and heavy rain to the region.

Central Virginia has been battered by storms several times in the past few weeks, with multiple of these storms causing flash floods. On Friday, July 18, another wave of severe thunderstorms hit the area.

These storms are bringing down trees and damaging powerlines -- including one in Henrico County, located at Dickens and Staples Mill roads, pictured below.

As of 11:15 p.m. on Friday, about 7,508 Dominion Energy customers have no power due to this storm damage. This includes major outages in the following localities:

  • Chesterfield County: 2,853 homes and businesses without power
  • Henrico County: 2,706 homes and businesses without power
  • Sussex County: 1,219 homes and businesses without power
  • Dinwiddie County: 307 homes and businesses without power
  • Prince George County: 238 homes and businesses without power
  • Petersburg: 185 homes and businesses without power

At the peak of the outage Friday night, over 11,800 customers were without power. Just over 7,600 of those buildings were in Henrico.
