Petersburg mother arrested after loaded gun found in 5-year-old child’s backpack
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- A Petersburg mother is facing charges after a teacher at her 5-year-old child's preschool found a loaded gun in their backpack. On Wednesday, Dec. 4, a teacher at Westview Early Childhood Education Center -- a preschool that is part of Petersburg City Public Schools -- was putting homework into the unidentified student's backpack when she noticed the gun. The Petersburg Bureau of Police confirmed to 8News that the gun was loaded at the time. Both the school’s security team and its School Resource Officer responded and the officer secured the firearm. No students or staff members were hurt.
