Petersburg Sheriff’s Office warns residents of new scam targeting sex offenders
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- The Petersburg Sheriff's Office is warning its residents of a recent scam where scammers are targeting sex offenders.
According to the sheriff's department, this scam involves scammers falsely informing sex offenders that they have missed a court date or a meeting -- while demanding a large amount of money "to avoid arrest."
Sheriff Crawford stated that no one from the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office would ever call individuals requesting money for any reason. Additionally, she urged anyone who receives a suspicious call to report it immediately.
