Petersburg’s first upscale boutique hotel opens its doors to guests

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Hotel Petersburg, the city's first upscale boutique hotel, opened its doors to overnight guests on Thursday. Hotel Petersburg, a Tapestry Collection by Hilton property, opened its doors on Thursday, Dec. 5 for overnight guests. The hotel, which is operated by Retro Hospitality, is located at 20 West Tabb Street in Petersburg's Courthouse Historic District, a neighborhood recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. According to a spokesperson for the hotel, the building was designed in 1915 by renowned architect Charles M. Robinson, with the Hotel Petersburg replacing a mansion known as The Shirley Hotel, which operated from 1916 until a fire in 1969 left it vacant. In 2017, Petersburg entrepreneur Nat Cuthbert acquired the building and collaborated with The Yellow Room architecture firm to restore and reimagine the historic space. On Thursday, Shirley's, a full-service restaurant and bar serving seasonal fare opened, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and bar offerings, as well as full-service breakfast on weekends and a grab-and-go menu on weekdays. Additionally, 20 West, a seasonal rooftop lounge with curated cocktails and sweeping city views, and The Boiler Room, a speakeasy-inspired spirits bar, will open in the upcoming months, according to officials. According to the spokesperson, the seven-story building showcases its restored Second Renaissance Revival design, featuring original marble columns, a grand staircase with brass handrails and terra cotta cornices with Italian-inspired scrolls on the exterior. Hotel Petersburg has also been designated as a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation that recognizes and celebrates the finest historic hotels, according to officials. "The opening of Hotel Petersburg marks a new chapter for Petersburg,” Cuthbert said. “Visitors to our vibrant city will now be able to enjoy upscale accommodations that are as charming as Peterburg itself." Hotel Petersburg offers 2,200 square feet of event space, with indoor and outdoor options. Reservations for overnight stays at the hotel can be made on Hotel Petersburg's website.
