The operating budget approved by the board totals $124,265,399.
According to the county's budget book, part of the budget plan is dedicated to continued investments in infrastructure through the capital improvement budget, with an investment of $27,419,000.
In terms of education, the operating budget has a school operating fund of $62.6 million -- an increase of 2% from the year prior -- including inter-fund transfers.
Public safety will see an increase of 6.4% from $13.8 million in fiscal year 2025 to $14.7 million in fiscal year 2026 -- including increases for the sheriff's office, fire department and emergency medical services.
The operating budget's capital projects fund saw one of the biggest decreases in funding from fiscal year 2025, dropping from nearly $4.5 million in fiscal year 2025 to $3.5 million in fiscal year 2026 -- a decrease of 20.6%.
The budget document also shows that the majority of the county's revenue is generated through general property taxes. In fiscal year 2026, Powhatan expects to receive $63 million in general property taxes -- an increase of $5.1 million over the 2025 fiscal year. This increase is due to increases in the valuation of both real estate and personal property.
