Pregnant New Kent County dog ‘Maude’ found caught in coyote trap delivers first puppy

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- New Kent County's now-famous furry friend "Maude," the pregnant dog who was found with a coyote trap around her neck, has given birth to her first and only puppy.

The announcement came Monday, Jan. 26, from New Kent Sheriff's Office Animal Protection.

Maude was previously fighting for her life after she was discovered and picked up on Monday, Jan. 19, in New Kent County along Eltham Road near its intersection with New Kent Highway.

According to New Kent County's Sherriff's Office Animal Protection, she had a tightly wrapped coyote trap around her neck, leaving her head extremely swollen and causing a "disgusting amount of damage."

In an update on Thursday, Jan. 22, officials reported that Maude was "doing exceptionally better," and that her face was no longer swollen.

"She is happy to see people who love her," county officials said.

As of Monday, Jan. 26, Maude was on her first day out of the veterinarian's office and is back with the County's Sherriff's Office of Animal Protection, where officials said "Maude felt comfortable enough to have her puppy."

The dog mom was set up in their whelping box room, and according to officials, is "doing fantastic."

She was also checked by a local veterinarian to see if she would give birth to anymore puppies, but it turns out Maude is a mother to only one "spoiled only child."

So far, Maude has been doing well and taking great care of her pup, according to officials.

"Mom and pup are doing great," officials said.
