Prince Edward County Animal Care and Control at capacity

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Prince Edward County Animal Care and Control has announced that its shelter is at capacity. According to the shelter, it is working to find placements at rescues and new homes for the animals in its care. During 2024, the shelter said it had 514 dogs and cats come through the shelter, which is its highest total in 10 years. The shelter's space for accepting new animals is reportedly severely limited until animals are adopted or transferred. In the event of strays, the shelter said it will only be responding to emergencies. Owner surrenders are not being accepted, according to the shelter. This comes after the shelter seized over 20 dogs from a home in the county in October of 2024 due to concerns for their welfare.
