Prince George appoints first-ever Black county attorney

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Prince George County has made history by appointing its first-ever Black county attorney, a man with nearly a decade of experience in local government law.

On Tuesday, Feb. 10, the Prince George County Board of Supervisors appointed Hassan T. Kingsberry as its next county attorney. Kingsberry's appointment is historic, as he is the first-ever Black person to serve as Prince George's top legal counsel.

The North Carolina native brings about a decade of experience in local government law to his new role, according to the county. Kingsberry previously served as both the city manager and the city attorney for Henderson, North Carolina, as well as the town attorney for Wake Forest and the county attorney for Warren County, North Carolina.

Additionally, Kingsberry has a history in education, as he taught social studies at his alma mater -- Warren County High School -- while earning his master's degree.

"Mr. Kingsberry's record of service and dedication to communities like ours will be a tremendous asset to Prince George County," said chairman of the county's Board of Supervisors, Robert "Bobby" Cox, Jr., in a press release. "His extensive background in local government and commitment to public service make him an outstanding choice for county attorney."

Kingsberry is filling a role left vacant after his predecessor, former county attorney Andrea Erard, resigned after less than two years in the position.

His first day is set for Tuesday, Feb. 17.
