Remembering Brad McNeer: Chesterfield fire celebrates his legacy on 25th anniversary
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County Fire and EMS is remembering Brad McNeer, a Bon Air volunteer firefighter who died in a crash on duty 25 years ago on December 18, 1999. McNeer was a passenger in Engine 49 responding to an emergency call in Chesterfield County. The fire truck overturned on Old Buckingham Road in Midlothian. McNeer died from his injuries later that day. "Who knows what his life would have [been], you know? Most likely [he] would have been a firefighter here with us today." Chesterfield County Fire and EMS continues to honor McNeer's memory in several ways. His name is etched on the Wall of Honor alongside other fallen heroes in front of the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center. The fire department also created the "Brad McNeer Scholarship," which provides tuition assistance to members of Chesterfield Fire and EMS who are pursuing a college degree. Anyone who works for the department is eligible to apply for it. "[The scholarship] has been going on for the last 25 years, which is one way that we try to memorialize his death," Luciano said. One can also find portraits of the six fallen Chesterfield and EMS members in a hallway in the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center.
