Richmond man sentenced after waving handgun during dispute at store
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A Richmond man was sentenced to over two years in prison after officers found him, a previously convicted felon, with a handgun he pulled during a dispute at a convenience store. On Tuesday, Dec. 3, 27-year-old Mario Leequan Thorne was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). This charge stems from a Jan. 26 incident at a local convenience store. According to court documents, Thorne got into a verbal dispute at said store and pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband, which he waved in the air. When other officers arrived, they found Thorne in the driver's seat of his car. According to court documents, six young, unsecured children were also in the car. After detaining Thorne, officers searched the driver seat area of the car and found a handgun, Thorne's Virginia ID, 2.32 grams of fentanyl, 3.07 grams of cocaine and a digital scale. Thorne was previously convicted in 2022 of possessing a concealed weapon. As a previously convicted felon, he cannot legally possess a firearm or ammunition.
