Richmond Navy Week to celebrate U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond Navy Week is returning in the middle of May as part of a national outreach effort, coinciding with the 250th birthday of the U.S. Navy.
Richmond is one of 15 cities hosting the week this year from May 12 to May 18. The maritime celebration will feature more than 70 events aimed at sharing the importance of the Navy and defending national security with Virginians.
“Virginia has always had a strong military presence,” said Petty Officer Second Class Steven Wray, a graduate of Lloyd C. Bird High School, currently stationed in Pearl Harbor. “The Navy presence is huge in Norfolk and Virginia Beach but not seen as much in the Tri-City area. During my career some of my best moments have been being able to give back to the local community. To be able to do that in my hometown and shine a light on the Navy [means] the world to me.
According to announcement form the Navy Office of Community Outreach, the week, which has been held since 2005, has visited over 95 cities in the U.S. and prioritizes cities that has a notable naval presence and community.
"The program highlights how the Navy ensures the security, prosperity and freedom of the nation, while inspiring new generations to consider careers in military service," the announcement reads.
The Navy Office of Community Outreach has not released the full schedule for the week, but said it will come in the coming weeks.
