Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Central Virginia
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service has been issued for Buckingham County and other nearby areas. Around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, the weather service reported that "severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Wingina to Buckingham to near Toga." The storms are moving at 55 mph, according to the weather alert. The storm may include "60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail." Amherst County, Nelson County and Albemarle County will also reportedly be affected. "Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure. Prepare immediately for large hail and damaging winds," the alert reads. Nearby residents are encouraged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of their building and stay away from windows. The severe thunderstorm warning will remain in effect until 4:30 p.m.
