Severe thunderstorm warning, watch issued for Central Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for some Central Virginia localities, and all of the area is under a severe thunderstorm watch.

A severe thunderstorm warning means a severe storm or storms have formed in or near the impacted areas. Some localities are under such a warning on Saturday, July 19.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning that will be in effect until 4:15 p.m. for the following localities on Saturday, July 19:

  • Buckingham County
  • Fluvanna County
  • City of Charlottesville

A severe thunderstorm watch will be in effect until 10 p.m. on Saturday in the following localities:

  • Albemarle County
  • Amelia County
  • Brunswick County
  • Buckingham County
  • Caroline County
  • Charles City County
  • Chesterfield County
  • City of Charlottesville
  • City of Emporia
  • City of Hopewell
  • City of Richmond
  • Cumberland County
  • Dinwiddie County
  • Essex County
  • Fluvanna County
  • Greene County
  • Greensville County
  • Goochland County
  • Hanover County
  • Henrico County
  • King and Queen County
  • King William County
  • Louisa County
  • Lunenburg County
  • Mecklenburg County
  • Middlesex County
  • New Kent County
  • Northumberland County
  • Nottoway County
  • Orange County
  • Powhatan County
  • Prince George County
  • Prince Edward County
  • Richmond County
  • Sussex County

These kinds of storms can cause damage to trees, vehicles and powerlines, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
