Tips to prevent frozen pipes from Prince George County

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- As temperatures are expected to drop overnight, Prince George County has shared tips on how to prevent frozen pipes.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, Prince Greorge County shared in a post that its utility team has received multiple reports of frozen pipes. With temperatures continuing to drop overnight, they shared tips on ways to prevent frozen pipes and what to do if they freeze over.

Tips on how to protect your home and prevent frozen pipes are listed below:

  • Try to keep your home at 55 degrees or higher.
  • Allow your indoor faucets to drip, especially if they are on an exterior wall.
  • Open the cabinet doors underneath the sinks so that warm air can reach the pipes.
  • Drain and turn off all outside water lines, such as spigots and irrigation lines.

If your pipes do freeze over follow these tips:

  • Turn off the water to the home immediately.
  • Make sure to keep the faucets open to relieve the pressure.
  • Try to gently warm the pipes by using a hair dryer or warm towels; never use an open flame.
  • Once the pipes have been thawed, turn the water back on slowly and check for cracks or leaks. If you see any problems, call a plumber.
