EMPORIA, Va. (WRIC) -- A man was rescued from a burning pickup truck by a Virginia State Police trooper early Wednesday morning after his vehicle caught fire in the city of Emporia.

In a press release shared on Monday, March 30, Virginia State Police Trooper S. Baker was dispatched to a disabled vehicle on Low Ground Road in Emporia at about 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 25.

Police said Baker arrived on scene to find the pickup truck stuck in a ditch with the engine still running.

The trooper checked the vehicle and began to speak with the driver. The grass underneath the pickup truck then caught fire while the driver was still inside.

Baker removed the man from the pickup truck, though flames were starting to spread from underneath.

According to police, Baker moved the man away from the vehicle, but the flames engulfed the pickup truck.

Dashcam from Baker's patrol vehicle shows the flames starting to spread as he rescued the man from the vehicle, ultimately pulling him to safety on the other side of the two-lane road.

With his fire extinguisher, Baker attempted to put out the fire before firefighters and EMS responded. The driver was examined and then taken back to his home.
