Virginia SUN Bucks begin being issued for eligible families with school-age children

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia SUN Bucks have begun being issued to eligible families by the Virginia Department of Social Services with the aim of reducing food insecurity over summer break.

According to the department, Virginia SUN Bucks will become available on Friday, July 18 at the earliest for eligible families.

SUN Bucks are a one-time $120 grocery benefit given to qualifying families with school-age children. Benefits will be issued either on a family's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card or a pre-loaded Virginia SUN Bucks card that looks like a debit card.

The department said those who are automatically eligible:

  • Receive SNAP, TANF, or income-based Medical Assistance
  • Were approved for free/reduced-price meals during the 2024–2025 school year

Virginia SUN Bucks can be used to purchase groceries like fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and meat at grocery stores, farmers markets and other places that accept SNAP EBT benefits, according to the department.
