Water leak in Prince George quickly repaired after heat-linked soil shift

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A water leak in Prince George was repaired on Friday after being caused by natural soil movement -- specifically, the shrinking and swelling of the soil due to heat.

On the afternoon of Friday, July 18, Prince George Utilities crews responded to a water leak in the 7500 block of Barksdale Court. An emergency Miss Utility ticket had been submitted, and work was originally expected to begin around 5:30 p.m. Friday and be completed by 9:30 later that evening.

However, a spokesperson with Prince George County told 8News that the leak was repaired by 4:37 p.m. Friday.

Crews hand-dug to the service line to make the repair, which took place on the shoulder without damage to the roadway surface, according to a county official.

"As for the cause, I’m being told it was due to natural causes, most likely the shrinking and swelling of the soil caused by the heat, which contributed to the leak," the spokesperson said.
