54-year-old man identified as driver killed after tire popped off, truck flipped in Henrico

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 54-year-old Colonial Heights man has been identified as the driver who was killed after his truck's tire popped off and flipped on Interstate 295 in Henrico County on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, the Henrico County Police Division identified the driver who was killed in the crash on I-295 near Portugues Road on Wednesday as 54-year-old Jacob Scott Southers, of Colonial Heights.

Police said Southers was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt.

At about 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, Virginia State Police troopers were called to I-295 South in the area of Portugues Road in Henrico for a report of a single-vehicle crash.

Investigators learned that the pickup truck’s tire blew out, causing Southers to lose control of the vehicle and run off the road. The truck then overturned, went over the guardrail and landed on train tracks below. Southers died at the scene, according to officials.

Virginia State Police said the investigation into the crash continues.
