Amelia County High School cancels remaining football season

AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Amelia County High School has canceled its remaining football season. Amelia County High School's remaining football season has been canceled due to a low number of players participating on the team, according to a message shared by the school's principal John Ringstaff. "This includes next week's final regular season game against Buckingham County High School and any playoff games we would have potentially earned," Ringstaff said. The announcement comes after Amelia County High School forfeited their game against Lunenburg Central High School on Thursday, Oct. 31 due to player injuries. "We had our starting tailback re-aggravate an existing ankle injury then our other tailback sustained a concussion after an awkward tackle," Ringstaff said. "With no running backs available and prepared, we made the collective decision to forfeit." Ringstaff said the school began its football season without a junior varsity team due to the overall low number of players as well. "Please know that we are committed to supporting our football athletes as they process this change," Ringstaff said in his statement. Ringstaff said he encourages students who wish to continue building their athletic skills to explore the school's winter sports. "We remain dedicated to fostering a robust football program for the future, and we will work diligently to recruit and engage new students and coaches, aiming to field a full team in the coming seasons," Ringstaff said.
