Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies seek public’s help after 92-year-old woman robbed

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Hanover County Sheriff's Office deputies are asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects involved in the robbery of a 92-year-old woman last week.

The incident took place near the 9100 block of Whetstone Road and Cudlipp Avenue. Neighbors said they are shaken after learning the crime happened in a typically quiet and peaceful community.

According to investigators, on July 30, an elderly woman was targeted by two suspects — a white male and a white female — who approached her home and started a conversation.

The male suspect reportedly asked to use the restroom and was allowed inside the house. Once inside, he went directly to the bedroom, went through her belongings and stole items from a jewelry box. Meanwhile, the female suspect remained outside, distracting the victim.

A woman who frequently visits her parents in the neighborhood said she was heartbroken that someone would take advantage of an elderly person. She urged residents to be cautious.

“Our home is our kingdom, and when we know people have been in our house, it's… it's frightening,” she said. “Watch out for each other. Don't answer the door unless you know who's there. Don't open the door.”

Hanover Sergeant Steve Wills said these kinds of incidents aren’t rare.

“They might be offering services like driveway paving or tree services and use a person to distract the homeowner while somebody sneaks into the house to try to steal stuff,” Wills said.

The total value of the stolen items is still being determined. Authorities believe the suspects may be connected to a black pickup truck pulling a black utility trailer. The investigation is ongoing.
