Man charged in connection to Hopewell shooting investigation

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- One man is in custody as The City of Hopewell Police Department investigates a shooting that occurred near a school Friday afternoon.

According to Hopewell Police Department, the shooting occurred Friday, Nov. 14, at 12:21 p.m. when Hopewell telecommunications received multiple calls reporting shots fired around South 20th Avenue and Grant Street.

When officers arrived they reportedly found several cartridge casings at the scene. According to the initial investigation, "officers learned the incident occurred near a school. School officials were immediately notified, and the school was placed on lockdown as a precaution," stated Hopewell police.

After the suspect fled the scene, officers were led to a residence on the 400 block of South 9th Avenue where a search warrant was executed by SWAT where they found evidence connected to the incident.

The suspect has been identified as Tyrus Jevon Mclaughlin II, of Hopewell has been charged in connection to the incident.

Mclaughlin II has been charged with the following:

  • Three felony counts Attempted Malicious Wounding
  • Felony Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle
  • Felony Shooting Within 1,000 Feet of a School
  • Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony

McLaughlin was taken to Riverside Regional Jail where he is reportedly being held without bond, according to the Hopewell Police Department.
