Richmond ranks 28th amongst cities with bed bug infestation issues

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- According to a report from Orkin, Richmond ranks 28th in the nation for bed bug infestations throughout the U.S.

The rankings are based on treatment data collected by Orkin from May 15, 2024, to May 14, 2025, from metropolitan areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments.

Bed bugs are described as small, flat oval shaped insects that are brown and half the size of an apple seed, according to Orkin.

"Bed bugs are some of the most resilient pests in the world, making them extremely difficult to control if brought into a home or hotel," said Ben Hottel, an Orkin entomologist.

With summer being a high traffic time for travel tis can also aid in the transportation of bed bugs as well.

“As summer travel picks up, it is critical that people know the best ways to identify, prevent and control these pests," Hottel continued.

When traveling, Orkin has some tips to help search for these critters, which are represented by the acronym "SLEEP."

  • Search the room for any signs of an infestation: Ink-like stains on fabrics, shed exoskeletons around furniture or a sweet, musty smell.
  • Lift sheets, curtains and cushions to check for signs of bedbugs.
  • Elevate your luggage onto racks and keep it away from beds or other furniture.
  • Examine your luggage carefully while repacking & again when you return home.
  • Place all dryer-safe clothing from your luggage in the dryer for 30 to 45 minutes at the highest heat setting upon return.
