Richmond seeks community feedback on proposed Shockoe Valley road improvements
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmonders are invited to share their thoughts about an extensive road improvement project in the Shockoe Valley area at an upcoming meeting.
From 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, the city's Department of Public Works (DPW) will host a community meeting on the "Shockoe Valley Streets Improvement Project" at Main Street Station, located at 1500 East Main Street.
Some of the Shockoe Valley Streets Improvement Project's goals include making Shockoe Valley's roadways safer, fostering economic development and better connecting the area to other parts of the city.
Per a Nov. 13 press release, through this project, multimodal safety improvements on roads like Oliver Hill Way, 18th Street, Veneable Street and Mosby Street will be implemented. This includes changes like:
- Converting Oliver Hill Way and 18th Street into two-way streets
- Building landscaped roundabouts at the intersections of Oliver Hill Way and Veneable Street, 18th and Veneable streets, Mosby and Veneable streets and Mosby Street/East Leigh Street/O Street
- Redesigning Broad Street to "seamlessly connect" with the existing streetscape from 14th Street to 21st Street
- Adding more sidewalks, street trees, decorative lighting and other streetscaping enhancements
- Upgrading shared use paths and cycle tracks for cyclists, completing the area network
According to the city, those who attend Tuesday's meeting will be able to learn more about the proposed improvements and review preliminary design plans. They will also be able to share their thoughts with the DPW, as well as city officials, transportation planners and engineering consultants on the project.
