Truck hauling over 8,000 gallons of gasoline overturns, spills in Brunswick

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Cleanup in Brunswick County is expected to take days after a truck hauling over 8,000 gallons of gasoline overturned and spilled on New Year's Eve. Just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, the first of many crews were called to 61 Old Stage Road in Brunswick for report of a crash that possibly involved hazardous materials. They were also told that someone may be trapped. When they arrived, firefighters found that a truck carrying about 8,100 gallons of gasoline had overturned. Its driver was able to escape on their own prior to units arriving at the scene. They had minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital. They were involved in containing the spill and keeping it from spreading further. "Attempts were made to stop the leaks on the trailer but were unsuccessful due to damage to the trailer and valves," South Hill fire officials said. Prince Edward convenience store robbed twice in less than a month More units -- including regional hazmat crews with the Henrico County Division of Fire and personnel from both the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency -- came to the scene to aid in clean-up efforts. Ultimately, crews drilled into the truck's tank and pumped the remaining gasoline into another trailer. This process took several hours, according to South Hill fire officials. Further hours were spent removing the truck and trailer and removing the spilled gasoline from the ditch.
