VDEM shares fireplace safety tips ahead of winter weather
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As more winter weather heads towards Central Virginia this weekend, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) is sharing safety tips for families turning to fireplaces to stay warm.
When used properly, fireplaces can be a safe heat source, but improper use can cause house fires and carbon monoxide emergencies, per the department.
Before lighting your fireplace, make sure to remember the following safety tips:
- Have chimneys and vents cleaned and inspected regularly
- Burn only dry, seasoned wood, never trash, cardboard or treated wood
- Use a sturdy screen or glass door to contain sparks and embers
- Keep furniture, decorations, and other combustibles at least 3 feet away
- Never leave a fire unattended or burning overnight
- Make sure ashes are completely cool before disposal, store them in a metal container outside
- Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working and have fresh batteries
In regard to alternative heat sources during a power outage, officials cautioned people against using grills, fire pits or fuel-burning appliances indoors.
