20-year-old suspect arrested, victim identified in New Years Day homicide in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A suspect has been arrested and the victim was identified in the New Years Day homicide that caused the victim to drive into a Chesterfield County home. The Chesterfield County Police Department have arrested a suspect and identified the victim of the homicide that took place at the 14900 block of Broadwater Way on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Police identified the victim as 19-year-old Andrew Giles of Richmond. According to police, at around 12:58 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, officers responded to a report of a crash on Broadwater Way in Chesterfield. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a vehicle that crashed into a nearby home. Police said that Giles was found inside of the vehicle dead from gunshot wounds. After investigating, police identified 20-year-old Nekyi Cherry of Richmond as the suspect in this incident. Cherry was charged with second-degree murder and shooting in a public place. Cherry was apprehended in Henrico County on Thursday evening, Jan. 2, with the help of U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Fugitive Task Force. He is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without a bond. This case is still being investigated by the Chesterfield County Police Department.
