Caroline elementary teacher accused of assaulting student

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Caroline County elementary school teacher is facing multiple felony charges after a child reported a possible assault to their parent.
On Friday, Sept. 19, staff at Bowling Green Elementary School shared a report of a possible assault with the school's School Resource Officer (SRO). According to the Caroline County Sheriff's Office, a child at the school told their parent about an incident with a teacher, which prompted the parent to lodge a complaint.
The SRO, in partnership with the sheriff's office, investigated this complaint and later arrested 28-year-old Spenser Bettinger in connection with the incident.
She has been charged with felony child abuse, felony causing an injury to a child while having custody of the child and assault.
Bettinger was taken to the Pamunkey Regional Jail, where she was held on a $5,000 secured bond. Her next court appearance is set for Sept. 29, according to online court records.
No additional information is available as of the time of reporting.
“We appreciate the immediate response of Bowling Green Elementary’s administration and staff, who took the proper steps to protect their students," said Caroline Sheriff C. Scott Moser.
